Former Kosovo Police Director Rashit Qalaj said Prime Minister Albin Kurti and no one else has the right to violate the operational capacities of the Kosovo Police throughout the country.

Qalaj said he hopes that the agreement reached in Bratislava for the extension of the situation in the north is only about the police's physical presence about municipal facilities and not operations.

The former director states that police receive permission only when there is a court order for implementation, adding that all these actions have been unnecessary and that Kurti surrendered to criminal gangs.

There is no one, nor Prime Minister Kurti nor the Government, and no one else in this country can affect the Kosovo Police's operational capacity throughout the country. No one has the right to limit freedom of movement and freedom of action in the implementation of the Kosovo Police law even in northern municipalities, I hope that this part of the agreement concerns only the case of the Lepsaviqi municipality, not the” operations.

Police only receive permission when there is a court order for implementation, otherwise the operational order is determined by the law. Neither this government nor anyone has the right to make any agreement that will force the Kosovo Police to obtain permission or discuss for its affairs. Government Kurti surrendered to criminal groups there even in the face of measures, all these actions have been unnecessary”.

I have to say that every deal that's meant for the north to settle down a little bit, I believe it's a good deal, even though what's been done is delayed, because this whole situation in the north has been created unnecessary and we have a different dangerous situation where it could easily lose lives in the north. The agreement that has been reached and has to do with the police is that reducing the police's capacities around municipalities is 25%, but as far as I've understood, the agreement has nothing to do with the operational work of the police, but only the issue on municipalities where Special Unit<x1 is located.

The deal envisions the immediate reduction of 1/4 of police within municipal buildings or in close proximity. So 25% of the police will move somewhere else to the same municipalities and continue the task where there is a greater need for them, since we consider that near municipal buildings the situation is now two weeks ago much calmer.

As well as the Kosovo Police, depending on the circumstances, together with EULEX and KFOR will assess the security situation, with the aim of eventually seeing possibilities for further reduction of police presence in municipal buildings or near them. This was our request from the start, since rule of law and peace and security are viewed as the common interest of all sides.
