Pope Francis has said that the burning of a copy of the Muslim holy book, the Koran, has angered and disgusted it. He added that he condemns and refuses to allow such an act as a form of expression of freedom of speech.
“Any book considered holy should be respected to respect those who believe in”, Papa Francescu said in an interview given to the United Arab Emirates newspaper Al Ittihad, published on 3 July. “I feel angry and disgusted by these” actions.
“Freedom of the word should never be used as a tool to despise others, and allowing it to be rejected and punished”, he added.
A man tore and burned a copy of the Koran in Sweden's capital, Stockholm, last week. The move brought widespread criticism from several states, including Turkey, whose support Sweden must gain for membership in the NATO military alliance.
Swedish courts had decided that the police had no right to refuse permission to burn the Koran.
The incident triggered protests in Iran and Iraq. Official Tehran has postponed the decision to appoint a new ambassador to Sweden.
