Fighters of the Russian mercenary group Wagner, now in Belarus, can be represented as migrants and enter the European Union, Polish Prime Minister Matthews Morawiecki has said.
According to him, Wagner can even mediate illegal migration from Belarus to the European bloc, the move Poland describes as the hybrid <x0).
The Polish prime minister has said that about 100 Wagner troops have moved near the town of Grodny, which lies near the borders of Poland and Lithuania.
Several members of Wagner have gone to Belarus under the deal to end the group's rebellion in Russia in June.
Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko has earlier denied that he has provoked crisis of immigrants in Europe, prompting migrants to head towards its borders with the EU.
The situation is now becoming even more dangerous”, he said at a news conference after visiting an arms plant in southern Poland.
This is certainly a step towards a hybrid attack on Polish territory”, he added.
The Polish prime minister has said there are 16,000 attempts to cross the border from Belarus to Poland this year.
According to the EU Border Agency, 2,312 illegal border crossings have been registered in the January-June period.
Poland and Lithuania have placed thorny wires on their border lines with Belarus to limit the number of people illegally passing through their lands.
They are also considering total border closure with this state. / REL
