German portal DERWESTEN has ranked the poorest countries in Europe for 2023.

The list is created on the basis of the Bruto (GDP) internal production per capita. GDP ( GDP reflects the value of all goods and services produced in one country. For creating the list, GDP has been divided with the number of residents to compile a list of the poorest countries in Europe as accurate and comparable as possible, says the published article.

On the list of 10 poorest countries in Europe DERWESTEN has ranked 10 countries:

In 10th place, Serbia ranks Serbia, which is said to have a GDP of $10.360.72 per capita.

9th place: Montenegro. The relatively small nation of 600,000 people is strongly influenced by tourism and has a GDP of $9,811.86 per capita.

8th place: Belarus with a GDP of 7,859, $66. The country benefits greatly from the textile industry and wood processing.

7th place: Bosnia and Herzegovina with a per capita GDP of $737,72 US dollars.

Sixth place: Georgia with a Bruto Internal Product per capita of 6670,73 US dollars. The most important economic sectors in Georgia are tourism in the Black Sea, cultivation and export of agrum, grapes and tea, as well as the Mangan and copper mines.

Fifth place: Northern Macedonia: GDP per capita of $6,608,08 US dollars. The most important export goods are food, wine, iron, and steel.

Fourth place: Albania. This country's Internal Bruto product is $6,457,22 per capita. In some areas like tourism or inflation Albania has been successful, but it is still one of the poorest countries in Europe. In addition to high unemployment rates, Albania still has to face a very poor infrastructure.

Third place: Moldova. GDP per capita is 5,671,22 US dollars. Moldova's inhabitants live mainly from agriculture. Moldova's climate particularly favours growing fruit

Second poorest country in Europe is Kosovo

Kosovo was declared independent in 2008 and is recognised as an independent state by Germany, among other things. Within what was then Yugoslavia, Kosovo was the poorest region, and the state, with about 2.5 million people, is still one of the poorest countries in Europe.

This is due not only to failed social and economic policies as part of Yugoslavia but also to the consequences of Kosovo's war and a troubled industry.

For this reason, Kosovo was long considered the poorest country in Europe. On the list of poorest countries on the continent, however, Kosovo takes second place with a Bruto internal production per capita of 5,290.48 USSD.

In 2022, Kosovo was the last Balkan country to apply for EU accession.

Poorest country in Europe, Ukraine

The fact that Kosovo has been replaced as the poorest country in Europe is mainly due to the Russia-Ukrainian war, which began with the invasion of Russian troops in February 2022. Until the beginning of the war, Ukraine's economy was in a growth course, but is also characterised by high levels of corruption, does not have a full market economy and is not a determined democracy. The Bruto internal product per capita in Ukraine is only $44,348.57 American.
