A soldier of the Hungarian KFOR contingent (NATO-led peacekeeping force) has died.
According to available information, he ended his life. “A soldier from the Hungarian KFOR contingent (NATO-led peacekeeping force) has been wounded with his service weapon while off duty and is believed to have attempted suicide”, reports Magyar NemzetBased on the Defense Ministry information.
The soldier could not be helped by doctors who arrived at the Kosovo camp and died while transporting to the hospital. The event took place on July 4th, and investigations follow. Family members were immediately notified by the Hungarian Defense Forces. The 1999 KFOR mission began with about 50,000 troops, writes Magyar Nemzet.
However, that number has now been reduced to less than 4,000. The peacekeeping operation includes 27 countries, but three countries offer the largest number of troops. These are Italy (715), the United States (561), and Hungary (469). Therefore, these three countries dominate KFOR leadership. KFOR in general performs monitoring and supporting tasks. In peacetime, they mainly patrol and monitor the security situation.
