Greece threatens Albania's integration

Greece warns obstacles on Albania's path to European Union integration because of the Beler issue. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, speaking to Greek media, announced that he briefed his colleagues at the European Council summit in Brussels over the arrest of the president-elect Himara. Regarding keeping him in prison by [...]
He is still in prison, according to us with questionable procedural provisions, and this I consider a blow to the rule of law and Albania's bid to respect European rules and laws. I expect this case to be resolved very quickly. It's a very important issue for us, and the solution or its solution - I wish for the first one, I stress - will be an element of Albania's European road assessment that starts now, and as I told you, it's about a long trip. But observing the basic rules of the legal state is a non-negotiable condition for any country that seeks to become part of the European family”, said Greece's Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
The Greek prime minister follows his warning, stressing that he hopes his message is fully understood in Albania. Mitsotakis adds that he fully respects the division of powers in our country, but as he said, he will not allow the issue to pass lightly.
The Greek government has tried to intervene several times in the case of Freddy Beler, through her embassy in our country that has repeatedly called for his release.
On Tuesday, members of the Hymara Municipal Council were sworn in, in a highly tense constitutional session, while the elected chairman remained in custody, thus failing to take office. Beler was arrested two days before the May 14th elections, suspected of corruption in elections by selling votes.
