But, former European Union special representative to Kosovo Pieter Feith says it is Pristina that will suffer the most consequences of the lack of progress in dialogue with Serbia.
The Ohrid Agreement, he says, has great significance because it would pave the way for Kosovo to join international organisations.
The “is unfortunate because there is no political will on either side to make further progress, but in particular thought Kosovo would suffer more consequences. If the parties take seriously the agreement reached in Ohrid, then things would move forward, and that would help Kosovo to join various international organisations as well as the United Nations”, Feith said.
The Dutch diplomat says the United States is losing patience with Kosovo, because it is not making enough progress.
Feith argues that the United States has never before had such a critical approach to Kosovo, and that, according to him, is disturbing.
“I see that the United States of America has a critical attitude towards the Kosovo government, and that is unprecedented. Clearly, the Biden administration is losing patience with Kosovo, due to slow progress. I have not seen such a critical US stance before Kosovo since it declared independence in 2008. It would truly be a tragedy for Kosovo if it loses the support of the United States”, he said.
Feith also has some suggestions for Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti.
The “in Kosovo must understand that a tough fight is under way in Europe, and the focus of world top centres is there. So you should remember that things are not what they used to be and you cannot count on the sympathy and support you once had. He did not think, however, that the US and the EU are supporting Vuciqi in the process. I know it's not easy, but I suggest Prime Minister Kurti make more efforts to dialogue with Serbs in northern Kosovo instead of sending special units there”, Feith added.
We remember that due to tensions in the country's north, Brussels has imposed punitive measures against Kosovo.
