The Russian Army has bombed a training site of the Ukrainian Army in Donbas, killing a soldier, informs Ukrainian sources. Even a Deutsche Welle team fell into Russian artillery fire.
A Ukrainian soldier was killed, and several others were injured in a Russian attack, which resulted in a DW cameraman being wounded Saturday.
The devastating bomb attack had targeted the Ukrainian army training site in Donbas, some 23 miles [23 km] from the front line, informs DW.
Ievgen Shylko of the DW was part of a team sent to report from the training ground near the town of Druzkivka that fell under Russian artillery fire.
“We were filming the Ukrainian Army during the exercise when we suddenly heard several explosions,” said DW correspondent Mathias Bölinger.
“We lay to the ground, more explosions followed, saw people injured,” he added.
Shyko was wounded when a grenade chip hit him. It is being treated in a Ukrainian hospital and is in stable condition.
“Later, the Ukrainian Army confirmed that we had been shot with ammunition”, said DW reporter Bölinger, who himself had detonated the attack without being damaged.
“I am so relieved that the life of Ievgen Shylko is not in danger and I wish him quick recovery,” said DW Director General Peter Limbourg.
According to the Reporters' Protection Committee figures, at least 15 journalists and media workers have been killed in Ukraine since Russia began its invasion on February 24, 2022.
“Gasers risk their lives every day to report on Russian aggression they deserve my greatest respect and thanks. Despite all precautions of security taken and distance from the Russian front, the work of our colleagues in the war zone remains dangerous”, Limbourg said.

What are the crushing bombs?
Crushing bombs can be thrown off planes or fired by tanks, artillery weapons, and rocket launchers.
They contain hundreds of small bombs, which fall indiscriminately in large areas from some football fields to several acres of land.
They are prohibited by more than 100 states because of the great danger they pose to civilians, but are used by both sides in the Russia-Ukraine war. /DW
