Residents of South Africa's largest city, Johannesburg, were fascinated by the first snowfall in more than a decade, with some children watching snow for the first time.

While parts of South Africa regularly take snow over the southern hemisphere months of winter between June and August, Johannesburg had last snow in August 2012.

On social networks, residents of Johannesburg described the snow as “pure imagination”, hot “ ” and an amazing “start of the week”.

Snow falls in Johannesburg once every five years on average, with bigger snow like the last one falling once every 10 to 20 years.

South Africa's weather service has issued warnings because of the cold front that has struck the province of Gauteng, which includes Johannesburg and the capital, Pretoria.
