CPJ for the Kosovo Clan case: We are concerned, avoid this threat to the media

European Representative for the Protection of Journalists (CPJ) Attila Mong said on Monday in a proposal for the Voice of America that his organisation is carefully following the situation in terms of suspending the Kosovo Clan business certificate. We are concerned because it is the first time in history [...]
We are concerned because it is the first time in the country's history that a business certificate of television is at risk or suspended in such a way. We think lifting a business certificate for a media, which could lead to the removal of a transmission license, is an extreme measure and should be taken only under extraordinary circumstances”, said Mr. Ming.
He added that it is a considerable step that requires a rigorous assessment by Kosovo authorities. Mr. Mong said the Committee for Journalists' Protection hopes this issue will be resolved without jeopardising media pluralism in Kosovo. Asked about the government's argument that the law is equally for all, he said it is true but that it is about an important media in Kosovo.
Any regulatory violation regarding a media, and not only in Kosovo, should be treated proportionally. And revocation or removal of the media organ license should be the last step. There are still legal means that television can use, and this type of threat (of media) must be avoided. Removing a television license should really be the last solution and must be applied proportionally”, the representative of the Committee for the Protection of Journalists for the Voice of America said.
