The United States has again urged Serbia to bring to justice those who have committed the murder of the Bytyci brothers as well as those who have covered that crime.
American citizens Star, Agron and Mehmet Bytyci were killed 24 years ago.
“Srike calls on Serbia to fully investigate this case and account for those who committed it and have covered this brutal act. We will continue this call until justice is put in place”, State Department spokesman Matthew Miller wrote on Twitter.
The American Embassy in Serbia stressed on Twitter that “Every year that passes without anyone being held responsible for this brutal war crime is an insult to rule of law”.
Star, Agron and Mehmet Bytyci were killed in July 1999 in Serbia, after the war in Kosovo.
They fought as part of the “Atlantic Brigade” side by side of the Kosovo Liberation Army (UÇK) during the war in Kosovo, meanwhile, they were arrested after the end of NATO bombings in 1999, at the border with Kosovo, for illegal crossings in Serbia.
After serving the 15-day sentence of detention, they were released from prison, but Serbian police sent them to the base of Serbia's Ministry of Internal Affairs Special Antiterrorism Units in Petrovo Sele, which was under the command of Goran Radosavlevq Gur.
Radosavlevic dismissed any responsibility for the death of the Bytyci brothers.
Their troops, with their hands tied and wounds from bullets fired on the back of their head, were discovered in July 2001 at a mass cemetery in Petrovo Selle, in eastern Serbia, along with other Kosovo Albanian troops.
In July 2022, the United States House of Representatives approved Resolution for the murder of its citizens, the Bytyci brothers, in 1999 in Serbia.
The resolution has stressed that <x0ndid individual suspects responsible for the murders of American citizens in Serbia in July 1999 should be brought to justice” and that the US needs “invest sufficient resources to fully assist and monitor Serbia's efforts to investigate and prosecute such persons”.
