Borrell condemns burning the Koran in Denmark

EU High Representative Josep Borrell has condemned the burning of the Koran after a group called “Danish Patriots” outside the Iraqi Embassy in Copenhagen, Denmark. The European top diplomat has described this move as “offensive, disrespectful and clear provocation” and has said that “respect for diversity is an essential value of the European Union. [...]

The European top diplomat has singled out this move as <x0ofoff, disrespectful and clear provocation” and has said that “respect for diversity is an essential value of the European Union. This includes respect for other religious communities”.

“The exchanges of racism, xenophobia and corresponding intolerance have no place in the European Union. We continue to defend freedom of religion or faith and freedom of expression, both outside and inside; but not everything that is legal is ethical”, said Borrell's statement, published by the European Foreign Action Service service (EEAS).

On his Facebook page, the far right group, Danske Patriot, published a video in which a man was seen burning what seemed to be a copy of the Koran and stepping on an Iraqi flag.

Copenhagen Police Deputy Chief Trine Fisker has said of AFP that “not more than tens of” protesters gathered in front of the Iraqi embassy.

I can also confirm that a book was burned. We don't know which book was”, she said. “ [The protest] was quite peaceful”, Fisker expressed.

Last week, crowds have set the Swedish Embassy in Baghdad on fire after plans to burn the Koran in Stockholm.

The last act that took place in Copenhagen has also sparked marches in Yemen's capital, Sana, where deep anger for Denmark and Sweden has allowed such acts.

Many Muslim nations have condemned this act. Turkey has considered the incident to be “the disgusting attacks against the Koran, while the Algeria Foreign Ministry has invited Denmark and Sweden ambassadors to condemn the acts for the interview.

About 1,000 protesters in Baghdad have attempted to enter Denmark's Embassy after the incident. Even in Iran there have been protests Saturday over these acts.

Local media in Qatar have reported that the largest state market, Souq Al Baladi, has removed all Swedish products from the window as a sign of protest.

Denmark has condemned the burning of the Koran, saying that <x0) such provocative and shameful acts do not represent the Danish government.

Swedish authorities have condemned the burning of the holy book, and the act has been considered Islamic.

Muslims consider the contents of the Koran to be the word of God, and any harm caused to the book deliberately is considered to be disrespect and a serious insult to them.
