Analyst: Current chairman's resignation, easier option for election

Former Central Election Commission directors, but also former municipal leaders, have explained that the law (for local government) envisions three administrative forms to go to early elections. For former Pristina leader Shpend Ahmeti, the resignations are the easiest and cleanest option.

“The resignations cause new elections to be held within a short period (however 60 days)”, Ahmeti wrote at Twitterão. The Kosovo Democratic Institute supports this approach. However, Eugen Cakoli, from this institute, tells Radio Kosovo that the resignations depend on the will of municipal mayors, two of whom do not come from the ruling party.

This is essentially up to part of the political will to take such actions, but also within the political spectrum, because two out of four heads do not come from Kurti's party, but from another opposition party. Therefore, there should also be consultations with them”, Cakolli told Radio Kosovo.

The elections are an obligation stemming from an agreement between Kosovo Deputy Prime Minister Besnik Bislimi and the European Union's envoy for Kosovo-Serbia dialogue, Miroslav Lajcak, for the extension of the situation in the north. From the Kurti government, though they have said that the country's authorities are preparing for elections, however, say they cannot be held without lifting EU sanctions against Kosovo.

But for analyst Artan Muhhaxhiri, such statements are intended to bring Kosovo in after the compromise made for the situation in the north.

Kosovo, however, must prove that it is serious about compromises and will not surprise either American allies or European allies with any new adventure. If the measures leave and hold elections in the north this thing will lead to de-excendance of the situation and towards the normalisation of the situation there”, Mujaziri said.

Other officials of the political situation say that in any option initiated by elections, they should consider the lower financial cost of holding them.
