The European Union has said today that it is willing to organise a high-level meeting, within the framework of dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia, but, according to the bloc, conditions must be created for something like that. Thus, EU spokesman Peter Stano has declared Monday, commenting on the possible meeting between Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti and Serbian President Aleksandar Vuciq.
Of course, we are always ready to be welcoming the summit at a high level, within the dialogue between Prime Minister Kurti and President Vuciq, when there are conditions, and when both agree on something like that. But at this stage, the most important thing is to reduce tensions on the ground and take concrete steps. And for that very reason, we have the EU special envoy [ Miroslav] Lajcak. He will report to the High Representative, [Joseph] Borrell, and the High Representative will announce member states to decide on the following steps” Stano has said.
Lajcak and the US envoy for the Western Balkans, Gabriel Escobar, visit Kosovo on Monday and Tuesday, with the aim of lowering tensions in recent days in northern Kosovo.
“They go to continue working on implementing European and American calls for Kosovo and Serbia to immediately reduce tensions and take steps for sustainable solutions. The platform for this sustainable solution is, however, in the EU facilitated dialogue”, Stano has said, among other things.
Local Serbs are continuing protests in three municipalities in northern Kosovo, Zvecan, Zubin Potok and Leposaviq, even 5 June.
They are regularly protesting May 29th to reject the entry of Albanian mayors into municipal buildings.
On May 29th, in Zvcan, local Serbs have clashed with KFOR members, resulting in injuries on both sides.
The international factor has repeatedly called for steps towards reducing tensions.
Some diplomats have also called for holding new elections in the north. Top Kosovo officials have indicated that something like this could happen.
