He in an interview for the German newspaper T-Online said Albin Kurti is the first Kosovo prime minister to have jeopardised reports with the United States.
“Problematic for Kurt is now because he is now the first Kosovo prime minister to risk a conflict with the United States. This could certainly weaken it within the country, even if the opposition is currently not very visible”, he said.
Schmitt appeared critical of France and the United States.
“Finance is less important on this issue: its governments have not been very active in the Western Balkans and have always been cautious towards Kosovo Albanians. I find it surprising that the US and France are now relatively biased, blaming Kosovo and hardly criticising Serbia”, Schmitt said.
The expert stressed that tensions in northern Kosovo were controlled by Serbia.
He said he sees them as a “political gift” to Serbia's President Aleksandar Vuciq.
The scientific director of the Austrian Academy of Sciences' Balkan Research Department was asked if these riots were predictable.
“Yes, especially in terms of the domestic political situation in Serbia. Last week there have been massive demonstrations comparable to those that led to the overthrow of then-President Slobodan Milosevic more than 20 years ago. Serbian President Aleksandar Vuciq is under great pressure. Current events in Kosovo are a political gift to him. He can now say: Our countrymen are in danger, we must unite the ranks now. In this respect he drew all stops, placed the army on the border, and used its bandists against KFOR troops”.
He noted Serbia's parallel structures in Kosovo and blames Belgrade for tensions raised in northern Kosovo.
The “and it is well known that the Vuciqi government holds parallel structures in areas dominated by Kosovo Serbs. So, of course there wouldn't be such massive unrest if Belgrade didn't want”/ I did. tv
