Ehat Mittaraj, executive director at the Kosovo Institute for Justice (IKD), said that Prime Minister Albin Kurti's recent actions in the country's north are primarily to buy time through these riots, so that the drafting of the Association agreement is not in his hand.
The international partners have said that 2022-2023 are the moment of reaching agreement between Kosovo and Serbia, given as September-October 2023, not only the basic agreement, but also for major achievements towards further normalisation of reports between the two countries”, Miftaraj said.
He added that because of the actions of the Government of Kosovo and the unilateral actions of the Serbian List in the case of the mass resignations of members of the Serb community from the institutions of the Republic of Kosovo, we have come to a situation in which the main topic is the establishment of the Constitution of the majority Serb municipalities.
The key card in these circumstances is that as soon as we get the statute, for that's why all the pressure is on Kosovo, which then opens the way to the other actions that come with Serbia, in front of our international partners”, Miftaraj added on the “Tempus programme to KTV,
He said that if we do not have an agreement between Kosovo and Serbia by the end of this year, this problem will last for the next 4-5 years, where Kosovo will lose much.
“After both the fact that Kosovo has received additional obligations in relation to the rights of the Serb community in Kosovo, there have also been benefits through which the international subjectivity of Kosovo would be strengthened, and if by the end of the year no association is established, we will have regregations in the development of European and international integration”, Miftaraj added.
These discussions at “Tempus” took place at the time when the meeting between Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti, American envoy for the Western Balkans, Gabriel Escobar and the European Union's envoy for dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia, Miroslav Lajcak, began.
