Kurti's minister had to go back, as Kosovo's northern municipalities are already in charge of the security issue, and Kosovo police have very little authority there.
The situation in northern Kosovo is continuing to be tense for nearly two weeks since Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti decided that with assistance from the Kosovo Special Police Units to send elected mayors to municipal facilities.
This coincided with violent protests by local Serbs, while international authorities demanded that the mayors exercise their duty from other alternative objects rather than the main municipal ones.
International councils were not heard. The co-ordination to send the mayors to the north was absent. As a result, the Kurti government faced strong international criticism, which followed sanctions.
Kosovo was excluded from military training “Defender Europe 23”, while it is reported that both the European Union and the United States of America are considering other consequences for Kosovo as a result of these actions and disobedience.
On the other hand, today the European Union's emissary for dialogue Miroslav Lajcak and United States envoy for the Western Balkans Gabriel Escobar have reported ahead of their superiors regarding their visit to Kosovo and Serbia.
Kurti was given a deadline to provide his answer regarding the escalation of the situation in northern Kosovo and the holding of new elections there, but a clear and formal response from Kurti was missing.
Amid these tensions in northern Kosovo, KFOR has already taken over the country's north, denying the visit to a Kosovo government minister in that part of the country. It remains to be seen what the international community's next steps will be in the face of the recently created situation in Kosovo's “problematic”.
