Hovnier says they have asked the Kosovo government to take certain specific actions to help ease the situation there, to help move forward for the benefit of Kosovo and regional stability. But according to the leading American in Pristina, the US is concerned because the Kosovo government has not responded positively to these requirements.
Not entering the specifics, Havenier said it is clear that there will be other consequences if this path continues where the Government of Kosovo does not respond to the demands of all its friends from all the countries they have and have shown over one or two decades our commitment to see Kosovo take its place in Europe and within European and Euro-Atlantic structures.
The US ambassador also spoke of canceling Klan Kosovo's business certificate after the documents were settled, issues he called important. For the United States, considering our history for a minute, the question of free and unlimited media is very important. He even went back to history, mentioning in 1787, when the US Constitution was discussed and sent to states for ratification, it became clear that there was not enough concern that certain specific rights -- one of which was media freedom -- and was the condition of several states to ratify the constitution -- had to pass certain amendments called the Law of Rights, including media freedom. This is part of the U.S. Constitutional ideals as United States of America.
Thomas Jefferson, the first secretary of state, third president, founder of the declaration of independence, referred to the media as the fourth power, and what it meant by that is that we have the executive branch, the legislative branch, the judicial branch and then the media and the role that media should play is to ensure transparency and accountability. So we take seriously all tendency to limit the role of the media and offer that service to society for transparency and accountability. So we're looking at this closely. We believe that any attempts to influence operation, business registration, transmission of independent media require very careful and detailed reviews and these actions should not be taken lightly, or without very important reasons.
