Marina monitors seas for possible enemy attacks and shared its findings with the US Coast Guard, which did not make the news public because “wanted to ensure continued search-saving operations and could not say for sure it was an explosion”.
The explosion was recorded shortly after Titan left for the ruins of the Titanic, the Wall Street Journal wrote.
US “Marina conducted an acoustic data analysis and discovered an abnormality in line with a” explosion, a naval official told the newspaper.
On Thursday, the US Coast Guard said it had found the remains of the submarine near the remains of the Titanic, which is located 3,800m underwater.
Officials told reporters that the analyses showed the remains found at the bottom of the sea were in line with the explosion of the submarine's pressure chamber.
The five passengers of the ship have been declared dead, according to OceanGate Expeditions, the company that had the submarine under management.
