Stoltenberg on Tuesday announced that NATO will send 700 additional troops to northern Kosovo to ensure security under the UN resolution. Even a battalion of soldiers is on alert if necessary.
But, according to him, the political solution through dialogue is the most appropriate.
“Sending additional troops to Kosovo does not mean that NATO gives up the political solution to tensions”, Stoltenberg has declared.
Stoltenberg earlier said that violence turns back Kosovo and the region. It has called for Pristina and Belgrade to take concrete steps to calm the situation.
International reactions against Kosovo came after shares of the Kosovo Police on May 26th, in three municipalities in northern Kosovo, Zubin Potok, Zvecan and Leposaviq, to ensure access to the municipal facilities of the new mayors of these three municipalities.
The escalation in the north culminated on Monday, May 29th, when KFOR peacekeeping troops intervened in Zvecan “to avoid clashes between the parties and minimize the risk of escalation”, and were attacked by several violent Serb protesters, which the Kosovo government says were Serbian criminal “ “. In this clash that took place, 30 KFOR soldiers were injured.
