Calm down a bit: EU sources say suspension of visa liberalisation is not option

European Union sources have told Free Europe Radio that, suspending visa liberalisation for Kosovo, which has been cited as an opportunity in the media, following increasing tensions in the country's north is not an option. But the same sources have acknowledged that the possibility of taking [...] is also being considered in the EU.
But, the same sources, have acknowledged that even in the EU, the possibility of taking measures towards Kosovo is being considered, if they continue to ignore demands for lowering tensions in the north, and finding a solution to return Serbs to local institutions of that part.
Local Serbs are continuing protests in three municipalities in northern Kosovo, Zvecan, Zubin Potok and Leposaviq, even 9 June.
They are regularly protesting May 29th to reject the entry of Albanian mayors into municipal buildings.
According to him, most member states think such a step would be exaggerated and counterproductive, which would go against Kosovo citizens, not against those whose actions are not in line with EU expectations.
Some other diplomatic sources in the EU have said the suspension of visa liberalisation would be a complicated process, even for procedural reasons, because the qualified majority in the Council would have to be provided for.
According to them, the suspension of visa liberalisation becomes more due to other causes, such as migration or security issues, and not so much political reasons.
But, however, these sources do not rule out the possibility that in the event of further escalation of the situation, and the presentation of threats for security, or even the risk of mass migration, this issue will not appear in the agenda of the EU.
The visa liberalisation decision for Kosovo was adopted by the EU earlier this year.
The decision is official and final, published in the Official Journal, and is expected to take effect as of January 1st, 2024.
Kosovo is the only country in the Western Balkans that does not enjoy free movement in the countries of the Schengen Zone.
