European Union Chief Diplomat Josep Borrell said that the weaker the Russian president, Valdomir Putin, the more a “could pose a greater risk”. Borrell made these comments after the rebellion of the Russian mercenary group Wagner that caused the largest political crisis in decades in Russia, the nuclear armed country.
“A weaker Putin is a greater risk. So we should be very aware of the consequences”, Josep Borrell said.
Putin faced the biggest challenge since coming to power in 1999, after Wagner's chief, Yevgeny Pigozin, led a uprising last weekend.
Chief NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, noted “divisions and divisions” in Russia, exposed by the actions of the Wagner mercenary group, but he warned it was “too early to issue any final assessment”.
Stoltenberg added that he expects new reports of military support for Ukraine during a NATO meeting next month in Lithuania.
Borrell also said that Europe should support Ukraine in the long-term plan, supporting the country “during the war and later”. / REL
