Johnson resigned after receiving the results of an investigation by lawmakers for the fraudulent statements he made in Parliament for a series of government events that violated the rules during COVID-19, when he was in power.
In a long statement of resignation, Johnson accused opponents of trying to expel him and implied that his political career may not yet have ended.
It is very sad that I am leaving Parliament, at least for now”, he said.
Johnson, 58, said he had “received a letter from the Committee of Privileges making it clear to my surprise that they are determined to use procedures against me to expel me from Parliament”, Johnson added in his letter.
He called the committee investigating him, who has members both from the government and opposition parties, a “kanguri” judiciary.
“Their goal from the beginning has been to convict me, regardless of the facts”, Johnson said, reports “Washington Post”.
The resignation will trigger special elections to replace Johnson as lawmakers for a London suburb of the House of Communities.
Johnson, whose career has seen a series of scandals and returns, led conservatives to an important victory in 2019, but he was forced to leave his post less than three years later.
He had been awaiting the outcome of an investigation by a House of Commons standard committee for fraudulent statements he made in Parliament for a host of gatherings at government buildings in 2020 and 2021 that violated the rules of isolation. / REL
