American expert Alon Ben Meir has suggested Kosovo's leaders take into account the EU and US councils, withdraw the police, make all efforts to calm the atmosphere and create the environment needed to resume negotiations on Serb majority municipalities. American expert Alon Ben Meir estimates [...]
American expert Alon Ben Meir estimates that the actions of Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti, regarding developments in the country's north, played in favour of Serbia's president, Alexander Vuciq, who immediately established the readiness of his armed forces and sent them close to the border with Kosovo.
That is how Ben Meir was declared in a Facebook post, where he stressed that the Kosovo executive head's move was exactly what Russia's president, Vladimir Putin, wanted.
This has increased tension and further poisoned bilateral relations between Kosovo and Serbia. Kurt's move was exactly what Russian President Putin” wanted, Ben Meir wrote.
The American expert has suggested that Putin was determined and did his best to destabilise the Balkans, and Kurt's actions simply fulfilled Putin's wishes.
Especially when the EU and the United States were doing everything they could to stabilise the region, especially as the war in Ukraine continues to rage”.
According to him, Kurti should consider the advice of the EU and the US.
“Rewind the police, make all efforts to calm the atmosphere and create the environment needed to resume negotiations for the majority Serbian municipalities”, Ben Meir concluded.
Otherwise, non-coordination with the United States of America to escalate the situation in the north will have long-term consequences for Kosovo.
So had the American emissary warned of the Western Balkans, Gabriel Escobar, on Tuesday, within his visit to Kosovo. According to him, a response by Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti will no longer be expected than Wednesday on June 7th.
The head of the Kosovo government has until this Wednesday to return to whether or not he wants to accept the US and EU proposal for calming the situation in the north.
The calming of the situation in northern Kosovo, holding new elections and returning to dialogue were the three European Union envoy's demands for dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia, Miroslav Lajcak, and US envoy for the Western Balkans Gabriel Escobar, during meeting with Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurtin.
The US envoy for the Western Balkans, Gabriel Escobar, said Washington stands with the people of Kosovo, but added it does not support an individual who “does not have a co-operation instinct” by alluding to Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti.
We're seeing that decisions are being made, despite our partnership, and that's the signal for us we can't accept this. Therefore, at some point, when we want to restore co-ordination and partnership with this government, we are ready, because we will always be with the people of Kosovo. This does not mean that we should support an individual who does not have that instinct of co-operation and co-ordination”, Escobar said during a meeting with journalists at the American Embassy in Pristina.
His visit to Kosovo, along with the European Union's envoy for the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue, Miroslav Lajcak, comes at the time of high tensions in Kosovo's majority-Serb north.
The security situation there has deteriorated since May 26th, when Albanian mayors of municipalities have officially taken office despite the resistance of local residents.
The April 23rd elections, out of which these mayors have emerged, have been boycotted by the Serb community.
Protests continuing in the north have culminated in violent clashes between Serb protesters and NATO mission soldiers KFOR in Zvecan on May 29th.
Despite calls by the international community to pull out Albanian police and mayors from municipalities in the north, Zvecan, Zubin Potok and Leposaviq Kosovo Government, with Albin Kurti at the helm, has not taken any steps in that direction.
