In the first two months of this year, two people have lost their lives at the workplace, as long as 51 accidents have been recorded. Unions protecting workers' rights call for respect for workers' rights and offering job security.
Ungood conditions and insufficient job security continue to cause life loss or even injury at work. Speaking to Radio Kosovo, Labour Inspectorate Chief Inspector Iron Nikci says that in the first quarter of this year, 2 people have lost their lives at work.
The number of accidents in the first two months of 2023 is 51 accidents, of which 2 have ended in death and 49 with injuries. In 2022, 40 workplace accidents occurred during the first two months. Of these accidents there was no death at all, they're all done with injuries. The difference in the number of accidents in these two months and the previous year is that we now have 11 more accidents. So, we have an increase of”, Nikci said.
Private Sector Union Chairman Yusuf Azemi, speaking of Radio Kosovo, said the deaths in the workplace are disturbing, since he said they have repeatedly raised voices for a particular fund for these cases.
“is a very big challenge for us as unions. The most serious thing is that we've sometimes raised our voices to have a special fund for these cases, there are many cases when the worker dies in the workplace, and they have a problem with the matter of ceremony as it befits a person, but our governments, so far, haven't shared any metal for this Ibrahimx1> fund, Azemi said.
Meanwhile, At and Hykoli, from BSPK, tells Radio Kosovo that workers in the construction sector are the most endangered.
“We have the construction sector where there's a large number of deaths in the workplace. This is a huge concern of BSPK, we've always posted this and asked the Labour Inspectorate for those who don't offer security to workers at the workplace, they get fined but also sentenced to jail if it's a big damage, and thus educate employers”, Hycol said.
Unionists estimate there should be more inspectors and job checks. There were injuries and deaths over the years, since the Labour Inspectorate found that during 2022, the number of workplace accidents was 394. Of these accidents, during the past year, 15 have ended with fatality.
