President Vjosa Osmani and Prime Minister Albin Kurti have celebrated today the 24th anniversary of the Chabrat battle.
Osmani has claimed that KLA martyrs are the seal of state eternity and “will always be remembered with respect”.
“26 fighters of the Brigade 137 “Gjakova”, of the Kosovo Liberation Army, 24 years ago came heroicly to the Battle of Chabrat, in their attempt to help their fellow citizens, who three days in a row submitted to the criminal actions of Serbia's genocide regime. Nearly 100 civilian residents were brutally killed by Serbian genocide machines, more than 300 were kidnapped by violence, as the struggle for the protection of the house threshold had risen far and wide, about a month before Kosovo became free. The KLA witnesses are the seal of our state's eternity and will always be remembered with respect!”, it was made known in Osman's statement.
Prime Minister Albin Kurti has stressed that we daily remember the great sacrifices made to free the country.
The May 7th morning of 1999, the Chabrat of Gjakova dawned under the siege of Serbia's numerous forces. In defense of civilians, Brigade 137 “Gjakova” emerged. The fierce fighting between the Kosovo Liberation Army and Serbian forces continued until May 11th. In these days of May 1999, 26 martyrs and more than 100 martyrs fell to Chabrat and the suburbs. Over 350 civilians of different ages were violently kidnapped. Many were held hostage in various prisons. Today, we remember boys and girls who fought in the battle of Chabrat. Every day we remember the great sacrifices of deliverance! Eternal be the memory of the 1022 martyrs and 361 martyrs of Gjakova!”, Kurti wrote on Facebook.
Today, in Gjakova you will remember the 24th anniversary of “The age of Chabrat”, in which dozens of martyrs and martyrs of the nation have been sacrificed for Kosovo's freedom. The dates 7, 8 May and 9 May 1999, for many of the citizens of Gjakova, who have since been in town, will recall the moments of fierce fighting between KLA forces and police, the army and Serb paramilitaries.
This battle has been important for the fact that the freedom fighters' mission has been protecting thousands of civilians in the city of Gjakova. Seven martyrs and 41 civilians have fallen into this battle. Also, on May 7-8th, 43 citizens of this neighbourhood have been kidnapped and eliminated.
