European Parliament Urges Greece to recognise Kosovo

Kosovo declared its independence in 2008 and is recognised by 111 states. However, it has not yet been recognised by five EU member states: Greece, Cyprus, Spain, Romania and Slovakia, despite everything showing that Kosovo is approaching “” Europe at a very fast pace.

After all, this is evidence of visa removal in 2024 for citizens travelling towards the EU. In fact, last week, the European Parliament adopted a resolution for Kosovo's “progress report” for 2022, a report proving Kosovo's significant progress.

While, at the same time, the Eurodeputs stress the long period of political stability after the 2021 elections, but also the approach to EU foreign and security policy.

It is also important to note that the European Parliament has called on Greece, Cyprus and other member states that have not yet recognised Kosovo to do so as soon as possible, allowing Kosovo to continue its European path. Austrian Eurodeput Lucas Mandl, from the European People's Party (EPP), has also called for recognition of Kosovo.

Let's talk a little bit about what the real situation is like in Kosovo. Among the six Western Balkan countries, it is the place where rule of law rules are respected, for example, freedom of thought”.

It should also be stressed, however, that top Kosovo officials, as they have said about Deutsche Welle, estimate that despite Greece's non-recognition of Kosovo, she recognises Kosovo passports. ”

“Indeed, it's not everything black and white, it has gray quandary”, Austrian Eurodeput Lucas Mandl told Deutsche Welle. Even if five member states do not recognise Kosovo, that does not mean they have a hostile attitude towards it.

I have the impression that Greece and Slovakia, to some extent, also Cyprus and Romania have good relations. On the other hand, there are states, such as South Korea, which have theoretically recognised Kosovo but do not have substantial relations. But even Israel recognised Kosovo and I think this decision was particularly important, because Israel is the main partner in the Middle East”.
