In the years that followed, its 17m-euro transfer fee has been the focus of a fierce conflict between two clubs.
FIFA had ordered the club to pay the first tranche worth 6m euros a decision for which Cardiff saw their complaint rejected by the Court of Arbitrazhi Sports. Their latest appeal with Swiss authorities has also been unsuccessful.
Cardiff has now filed a complaint with the Nantes Trade Court through their French lawyers, Olivier Loizon and Laure-Anne Montigny, reported “L BAR Equipe”
Basically, the club that competes in English football is asking for 100m euros in compensation for “lost due to”. The trial session will take place on 22 June.
Cardiff is also seeking the first tranche of transfer, plus interest, as well as “reputation damage”, bringing the total amount to 110m euros, which can be increased if Cardiff is looking to pay off the other installments.
Wellsian Club claims that based on their analysis of expected goals and expected points Sala's arrival would have given them the two points needed to hold the club at Premierliga for at least one more season.
Cardiff City is also critical of the role the agent, Willie McKey, reportedly played in the transfer, especially in organising the flight in question.
After being contacted by “L'Equipe”, Nantes' lawyers have shown that they are confident the claim will be rejected, stressing that after seeing their complaints rejected earlier, Cardiff opened another absurd legal front.
