Borrell's fears of the new crisis in the North, speak by KFOR

“I expressed once again our great concern for the situation in northern Kosovo following the recent partial elections with very low turnout”, Borrell said at the 2nd evening.

“Taking into account this scale, these elections are not offering any long-term solutions, rather they may have the potential to lead the situation to escalation and undermine implementation of the Ohrid Agreement, and we do not want that to happen”, he added.

For this newspaper Express has asked KFOR if there is a violation of stability in the northern part of the country. In response, KFOR's mission is said to be in charge of the peace security task, while adding that it is offering the necessary conditions for the EU to lead with dialogue.

The NATO-led KFOR “Mission continues to monitor local developments and remains fully focused on the daily implementation of its mandate based on the 1999 UN Security Council Resolution 1244 to ensure a safe environment and freedom of movement for all communities in Kosovo. KFOR also continues to provide the necessary security support so that EU-led diplomatic efforts can move forward”.

Meanwhile, for the possible opening of the Ibër Bridge, and if this move can lead to tensions, KFOR said this must be done through dialogue.

“Reopening the Ibër Bridge is an issue that needs to be resolved through political dialogue”.

Borrell in his statement had said that considering this very low turnout it is clear that these elections do not offer a long-term political solution, but that he hopes the crisis will not happen.

This is not what we want to happen. I hope no one wants to happen. But there is a big risk, and for that reason I have asked both sides to find a solution that enables Kosovo Serbs to return quickly to institutions that left last November”.

Prime Minister Kurti had also acknowledged that elections in the north would not yield long-term solutions.
