Violent measures considered international stakes by the Kosovo Police to enable new Albanian leaders to enter municipal facilities in the north. US State Secretary of State said the actions of Friday “would result with consequences in our bilateral relations with Kosovo”. Kosovo police have described the situation as calm today in four municipalities in northern Kosovo, inhabited by Serb majority, two days after new Albanian mayors elected in the 23 April elections who were boycotted by Serbs under a tense atmosphere were introduced.
Due to tension in the situation in the north Friday, Prime Minister Albin Kurti has had the worst American reaction since he came to power.
The Police's action to enable new leaders to enter municipal facilities, internationals described it as violence.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said he strongly condemns the actions of the Government of Kosovo, which, according to him, “are escalating tensions in the north and adding to instability”. He said these actions were taken “contrary to the advice of the United States and Kosovo European partners”, warning consequences for bilateral relations.
These actions have escalated undue tensions, undermining efforts to help normalise relations between Kosovo and Serbia. These actions will result with consequences on our bilateral relations with Kosovo”, Blinken said.
“We call on Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti to change course in all directions and refrain from other actions that could increase tensions and promote violence”, the American top diplomat added.
Similarly, US Ambassador to Kosovo Jeffrey Havenier had resulted, stressing that he condemned the Kosovo authorities' continued <x0 actions to enter municipal buildings in northern Kosovo”. He has stressed that today's “violent measures should be immediately interrupted”.
US Senator Chris Murphy, who visited Kosovo this week, said Kurti did not mention “any plans to enter these municipalities”.
“As a friend of Kosovo I am caught unaware and he [Albin Kurti] must stop this provocation immediately”, Murphy wrote on Twitter. According to him, the Kosovo institutions' action was a “deliberate provocation and unnecessary step”.
QU INT calls on Kosovo to step down
QUINT States ( The US, the United Kingdom, Germany, France and Italy have condemned Kosovo's <x0 decisions to break into municipal buildings in northern Kosovo, despite our calls for content”.
“We urge authorities to withdraw immediately and reduce tensions, as well as co-ordinate with EULEX and KFOR. We condemn attacks on EULEX on Zvecan”, the QUINT state report said.
QU The INT also expressed concern over Serbia's decision “to increase the level of readiness of the armed forces on the border with Kosovo”. QUINT countries have called on the parties for maximum “content and to avoid stimulating rhetoric”.
Stoltenberg talks to Borrell: Kosovo stress situation
Secretary - General NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, has asked Kosovo to expand the situation and not take unilateral and destabilising <x0-steps”.
Chief NATO announced that it has discussed it with European Union High Representative for Foreign Policy and Security Josep Borrell.
“I talked with senior representative Josep Borrell, regarding Kosovo. Pristina and Belgrade must now engage in the EU-brokered dialogue as the only path towards peace and normalisation. Pristina must stress the situation and not take unilateral steps, destabilising steps. Mission NATO in Kosovo, KFOR will continue to offer secure environment”, he wrote on Twitter.
Kurt says something normal happened: We have international support, and work is going well
Prime Minister Albin Kurti received Germany's envoy for the Western Balkans Manuel Sarrazin at a meeting Saturday.
As the prime minister's office announced, Kurti stressed at the meeting the importance of respecting the results of democratic elections, adding that moving mayors to their work offices and providing basic citizens' services should be treated as normal.
Later, the prime minister said he believes he will get international support.
And what's important about yesterday's day is that all we've been aiming at is that the mayors of elected municipalities in democratic elections have access to their offices where they should serve citizens. And I believe that we will have international support”, Kurti said about RTV Dukagini.
Asked to confirm whether there really is intercompetitive support for Friday's actions, Kurti said so: “we have and work is going well”.
