They have submitted a two-party bill to the US Senate, “The Child Protection Act on Social Media”.
The move will determine that children under 13 are banned from social networks, and those between 13 and 17 need parental consent to create an account.
It has also become known that according to lawmakers who proposed the law, social media is responsible for worsening the mental health crisis in the country and has also contributed to increased suicide behaviour in children and young people.
The move comes as Congress is seeking to make social media platforms safer for children. Also included is TikTok's ban.
In fact, under the Law on the Protection of Child Privateity, known as Coppa, social media companies already forbid children under 13 to use their platforms, but the law is often overlooked.
