At 10:00 Thursday, the mayors of Zubin Potok of Zvecan swear

Ilir Peci of Izmir Zeqiri on Thursday 25 May at 10:00 will be sworn in as chairman of Zubin Potok's Zvecan.

Erden Attic was sworn in Friday as new mayor of North Mitrovica

The new chairman of northern Mitrovica, Erden Attic, was sworn in Friday. He received mostly votes in the April 23rd elections, which were marked by low citizens.

On Friday, prior to holding the solemn session, Kosovo's flag was deployed at the municipality facility.

The first decision Attic made was the appointment of Katarina Adjanqiq from the Serb community as deputy head of the municipality.

Attic, after the oath said he would work indiscriminately and without discrimination with all citizens.

Attic said that along with his target team, he has normalisation of the situation in this northern municipality.

US Ambassador to Kosovo Jeffrey Hovenier has said that the elections held on April 23rd in the four northern municipalities were “regularly the laws of Kosovo mandated with the Constitution”, but added that the new mayors of municipalities in the north should enter only the buildings where they are welcome.

The selected “Offices must enter only the buildings where they are welcome. The location within the municipality in which elected officials take the oath at the ceremony does not affect their status as elected official”, he said in an interview for Telegrafi.

The American ambassador said he expects new leaders to take on technical and non-political roles.

In view of low turnout, we would expect newly elected mayors and municipal municipalities to take on a technical rather than political role, the ambassador has said.

Hovenier said any criminal activity intended to overthrow these officials in carrying out their responsibilities would face severe condemnation from the US and the international community.

The role of mayors of municipalities is defined with their constitutions and responsibilities. I don't think they should have any less, no more. Less would be illegal and would be compromise with our constitutional framework, with which we function. More than that, it would be a robbery of competencies, so we are a democratic state and we're pretending to function by constitution, rules and laws that society has agreed with. Perhaps the ambassador and others have thought that it might be problematic to exercise a position of full competence. But we will do our best to make everyone realize that we are living in a democratic state.
