The American diplomat, in an interview for the Voice of America, said that a person sanctioned for corruption by the United States cannot fight corruption.
Question: You at meetings with leaders of political forces have stressed the importance of clean candidates and integrity. However, we have noted that even individuals designated by the State Department, not only the case of Sali Berisha, are being openly involved in the elections, probably not by running personally, but by engaging in electoral campaigns or by supporting their family or relatives running. Are you worried about that?
Yuri Kim: It's a wrong thing. It's wrong. In the objective and well-informed view of the United States, persons who are designated should not be representatives of the Albanian people. The Albanian people deserve better and better. This is about democracy, and it's about reform in justice. And I think that when you have people designated by the United States for significant corruption, when these individuals claim to remove corruption, it's the same as the village fireman who promises to put out all the fires; and not only that, but it requires all the matches that can be found by all other villagers. It's just wrong, wrong. And I think ordinary Albanian citizens are smart and know that there is no logic. I think Albanian citizens deserve better and more than that; The United States of America believes Albania deserves and should be better.
