Svechla: New mayors in the north will have trouble

Kosovo Minister of Internal Affairs Jedal Svecla voiced conviction that the new mayors in northern Kosovo will have no problems in their work, because, as he said, “the law will be implemented throughout the country”. “In the north the difficulties are more specific, but there will be no” problems, Svecla said. “In the north the difficulties are more specific, but there will be no” problems, Svecla said in a statement.
Early local elections were held on April 23rd in the majority Serb municipalities in northern Kosovo, northern Mitrovica, Zvecan, Zubin Potok and Leposaviq but were largely boycotted by the Serb community.
Turnout, according to the Central Election Commission, was slightly over 3 percent.
According to the CEC's first data, the Vetevendosje Movement won northern Mitrovica and Leposavicin, while the Democratic Party of Kosovo took Zubin Potok and Zvecanin.
These municipalities, until last November, were led by officials from the Serbian List, the largest Serb party in Kosovo, which did not participate in the 23 April elections.
Representatives of this party said they would not allow municipalities in the north to be guided by those who took 1 or 2% of the vote”, but did not specify what measures they could take.
Speaking to the REL, Minister Svechla said the new heads “will work normally on Kosovo state objects”.
All administration objects in the Republic of Kosovo are state property. They are nobody's property and are not subject to anyone's wishes. They [the new leaders] will function there normally”, Svechla said.
