Stano: EU aware of Serbia's vote against Kosovo

European Union spokesman Peter Stano said Brussels institutions “are aware” that Serbia voted against Kosovo's application for membership to the Council of Europe. However, Stano did not want to answer the question whether the EU considers this act a violation of the agreement towards normalising the reports, which Kosovo and Serbia arrived earlier this year.
Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti, and Serbia's president, Aleksandar Vuciq, agreed on February 27th in Brussels on the agreement towards normalising the reports. Meanwhile, on March 18th in Ohrid they agreed on the Annex to implement this agreement.
Article 4 of this agreement says Serbia will not oppose Kosovo's membership in international institutions.
Despite Kurti and Vuciq not signing the agreement, the EU considers that agreement and has declared the document legally binding on both sides.
“Discriptions for signing [an agreement] are totally pointless and insignificant. There is a commitment to the highest political level, and that commitment has now become binding in the process of membership for both sides. Progress in dialogue and implementation of [the agreements] will be reflected in their [Kosovo and Serbia's] European”, Stano said.
The EU spokesman confirmed that the agreement reached in Ohrid is still valid and that the focus of all should be on implementing all agreements reached so far under the dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia, mediated by the European bloc.
On 24 April, the Ministerial Committee of the Council of Europe voted to forward the Parliamentary Assembly of this institution's application for Kosovo membership.
For that decision, 33 votes were for, seven against and five abstentions.
Before the vote was held in the Council of Europe, Serbia's president, Aleksandar Vuciq, indicated that his state would vote against Kosovo membership in the institution.
Kosovo has applied for membership in the Council of Europe on 12 May 2022.
The Council of Europe is the oldest European organisation to deal with the development of democracy and human rights. This organisation has specific procedures for accepting new members. These procedures are passed through the Council of Ministers and the Parliamentary Assembly, attended by MPs from member states parliaments.
