Russia currently assumes the presidency of the UN Security Council as it heads a group of countries tasked with preserving international peace, resolving disputes and fighting international acts of aggression.
Kremlin said he plans to exercise all his rights on the council, with Russia determined to head its meetings for next month and represent the body in other parts of the UN, Skynews writes.
The last time Russia was in charge of the council was in February 2022 when it invaded Ukraine.
“We call on Russia to professionally behave”, White House Press Secretary Karin Jean-Pierre said.
“Preses that Russia will continue to use its position in the council to spread dezinformata” and justify its actions in Ukraine. Unfortunately, Russia is a permanent member of the Security Council and there is no possible international legal way to change this” reality, she said.
The council consists of 15 members -- America, China, France, Russia and Great Britain -- are permanent, while another 10 members are elected for two-year terms by the General Assembly.
Its leadership is changed by its members each month according to alphabetical order.
