Pale political power could challenge mayors' work in the north

The low citizens' participation in extraordinary local elections in four municipalities in Kosovo's north could challenge the work of newly elected mayors. According to politicians, Albanian mayors of northern municipalities may have trouble exercising competencies, even since taking the oath or even forming executives [...]
Although with minimal voter turnout, extraordinary local elections in four municipalities in the north ended without incident. The same are being named legal by Kosovo authorities and diplomatic representatives in Pristina.
According to preliminary results published by the Central Election Commission, the four Serb-dominated municipalities won the candidates of Albanian parties. With only 100 votes, the mayoral race in Leposavic won the Vetevendosje Lulzim Hetem. His co-party, Erden Attic, won North Mitrovica, with 519 votes. Zubin Potok's first move won Izmir Zeqiri PDK with 196 votes. While in Zvecan, where Sladjana Pantovic was among the three candidates, the election won the candidate PDK, Ilir Peci, with 114 votes.
Although the winning candidates have been legally elected, their dim political power will influence the practical situation on the ground. That's what university professor Dritro Arifi told Radio Kosovo.
The victorious “candidists have legal and constitutional powers that are the right of any mayor to be elected in this form. But, do they represent the will of most communities living in those municipalities, that I believe does not want an explanation for”, says analyst Dritaro Arifi.
Therefore, I believe that these elections will produce a political agreement for the Serb community to integrate into the institutions of the Republic of Kosovo”, he says.
In addition, Arifi says that for finding a political solution, dialogue with Serbs is necessary, and the Serb side must understand that without partisanism in finding a solution, it cannot enjoy the rights they have guaranteed.
Politicalologist Arta Tahiri-Beqa says the dim political power of the elected mayors will challenge their work in northern municipalities.
Their highly pale political “could make the implementation of the mayors' competencies impossible. Since the formation of the executive, they could face obstacles, as it did not happen that elections can be realised in some schools, although they were on Kosovo territory”, says Arta Tahiri-Beqa.
“The challenge can be faced even when they have to take the oath of being mayor of”.
Four municipalities north of the country; Zvecani, Zubin Potoku, Leposaviq and North Mitrovica were without mayors since 5 November, when the long-standing mayors from the ranks of the Serbian List resigned. /rtk
