As the U.S. space agency points out, the ability to grow plants in space for fresh food and improve the overall life experience of crew members is “key” for future long-term missions.
Researcher Vega-05 increased tomatoes in the station's Veggie facility to examine the effects of light and garbage quality on fruit production, microbic safety and nutrients.
The structure, a miniature greenhouse, can be adapted to offer fresh products to those who do not have access to crops on Earth and to profit therapy for the elderly or disabled.
The crew performed three harvests in the 90th, 97th and 104th days, freezing tomatoes along with water samples and the stains of growth material.
