Oleksandr Bondarenko volunteered for the protection of Ukraine's territory after Russia's invasion in February 2022 and later joined the military.

Bondarenko, known as Sasha or Sasko, worked in the Ukrainian BBC service from 2007 to 2011, broadcasting from Kiev.
His colleagues paid tribute to the reporter and host of “extraordinary <x1 news>.
