On Sunday morning, April 2nd, polls have opened for the second round of presidential elections in Montenegro. Nearly 550 thousand Montenegrins have the right to vote until the polls close at 8:00.
After gaining the most votes in the first election round of March 19th, candidates for the president's position for a five-year term are Milo Djukanoviqi and Jakov Milatovici.
Djukanovic is leader of the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) and the current president of Montenegro. The 61-year-old has been leading Montenegrin politics for more than 33 years.
While, Jakov Milatovic, is Europe Movement candidate Tani, the party founded in June last year. The 37-year-old has been in politics for less than three years.
The right to vote for one of them has 542,154 citizens. Most voters are in Podgorica -- a total of 143.609 -- while at least there are only 1,777 voters in the country's north.
The winner in the second round of presidential elections will be the candidate to win the largest number of votes from the voters. The president's mandate lasts five years.
These are the fourth presidential elections since Montenegro's renewed independence and the seventh since the introduction of the multi-party system.
The rule of the election process will be monitored by ODIHR monitoring missions, European MEPs and the Council of Europe, as well as by nongovernmental organisations Centre for Monitoring and the Centre for Democratic Transition. / REL/
