Criosat, the dismantled satellite of the European Space Agency (ESA), tracked 200 thousand or more glaciers in 2010-2020.
Global research has been made about the state of glaciers by analyzing images from Creyosat, Anadolu writes.
The research, which concluded that climate change caused the melting of 2 billion of 720 million tons of ice within 10 years, found that the loss of glaciers corresponds to 2 percent of the world's glaciers.
The study found that 89 percent of the glaciers were melted because of a high atmospheric temperature and 11 percent because of hot ocean or lake water.
Over 80 thousand tons of glaciers have been melted down in Alaska, where the largest loss of glaciers is reportedly due to hot weather, says research.
Stressing the importance of monitoring the speed of changing glaciers, which millions depend on drinking water and irrigation in agriculture, it was said that the light color of glaciers, considered near white, reflects sunlight and supports the world's cooling.
Armed with a <x0 radar array” that collects data on the change of altitude and the mass of ice, Cryosat was used to measure the extent of global warming and polar ice cover.
Research results are published in “Geophysical Research Letters”.
