The collapse of the Jashar family in March 1998 caused Kadri Kastrati to leave Croatia, where he served as a military, to leave everything and lock in the Kosovo Liberation Army.
Initially from Tirana to train soldiers and volunteers who were also willing to fight for Kosovo's liberation. This all with one purpose, the protection of Albanian civilians who were being deported and massacred by Serb forces.
We've had hundreds and thousands of populations, civilians that we've been in charge of in one way or another, and we've been behind the mission to protect them as much as we possibly can, says Kastrati.
Despite his contribution from outside Kosovo, Kastrati says he moved to Podujevo to serve during the war in the Lapi Operative Zone. Upon arriving in this area, he recalls one of the moments he selected volunteers to go to Albania for weapons security.
The first group of recruits I accepted from civilians selected for those who were physically better and sent with Remi to Albania to take up arms”, the former KLA military says.
For a soldier who has served in other armies, the struggle to free his homeland has another meaning. A Strong Will From Men and Women United to Him The NLA, for Kastrac, was unprecedented.
Each soldier knew that the tank could be stopped with a rifle and not scared at all”, he says.
For all the hard work and sacrifice he has made and his fellow warriors it is hard to judge the war for deliverance at this time.
I find this very difficult to hear from prosecutors who say they've imprisoned political opponents, that's absolutely not true and there hasn't been a single such element. The Kosovo Liberation Army has been the army of the people”, Kastrati says.
The military, who also served in the Kosovo Protection Corps and the Security Force, seeks a fair trial against former Kosovo Liberation Army leaders after the war was fought only for the country's liberation.
