The Balkan Radio Free Europe Service has learned that Djukanovic has announced this decision at a party session Wednesday afternoon, and that a meeting of the party leadership is scheduled for April 6th, when the decision will be formalised.
Djukanovic has resigned from the party leader's position just three days after losing in the presidential election to Jakov Milatovic from the Europe Movement now.
Djukanovic was president of DPS from 1998, when he received power from President Momir Bulatovic.
Djukanovic will be replaced as party chairman by current DPS parliamentary club leader Daniel Zivovic.
