During a mass on the Danube coast at the end of a three-day visit, he prayed for peace in Ukraine and <x0 future with no hope, no war, with a future of cradles and not graves, a world of brothers and sisters, not walls”.
He also called on Hungarians and the rest of Europe to welcome emigrants and the poor.
Among those present were President Catalin Novak and Hungary's right-wing populist Prime Minister Viktor Orban, whose hot support for Ukraine has disturbed other members of the European Union.
Pope Francis has tried to create a diplomatic balance act in his prayers to end Russia's war by expressing solidarity with Ukrainians by keeping the door open for dialogue with Moscow.
