But Americans themselves seem to be avoiding the habit that today has conquered the whole world. Recent data shows that smoking in the US marked another historic low last year.
In her recent research, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention found that only 1 out of 9 adult Americans smoke. Meanwhile, according to the same study, electronic cigarette use rose to nearly 6% last year, up from about 4.5% a year ago. 1 out of 17 adult Americans use electronic cigarettes.
The preliminary findings are based on the answers provided under a study involving more than 27,000 people. Smoke is considered a risk factor in developing lung cancer, heart disease, and strokes. It has long been considered the leading cause of preventable deaths, which are related to risk factors that could have been avoided.
In the mid - 1960 ' s, 42% of adult Americans were smokers. But for decades the rate has suffered a gradual decline, due to taxes on cigarettes, increased tobacco production prices, restrictions related to smoking, and a less tolerant approach to smoking in public.
