How the Albanian language became a subject at Harvard

This is news that has made us very happy, and on Friday is also reflected in our media.

In this context, clocks for Eagle Elementary 1 began this semester, and the Albanian language was introduced into the Near Eastern language and civilisation department (NELC) where languages like Aramaic, Persian, Turkish and other are offered in this group.

Edona Cosovic, second-year chairman and daughter of an Albanian immigrant from Montenegro, told <x0vard Magazine” that she was one of the students who promoted the introduction of Albanian language at Harvard.

Raised in the United States, she learned to speak Albanian informally at home, but she found it difficult to preserve her tongue despite her strong desire to do so.

“When I was a child, my parents had no resources to buy us Albanian channels”, she says.

“We're in school all day, we watch TV in English, everything is in English, and they're also trying to learn English because they're working here and they're also trying to make money, so we lose language very, very quickly, within a” generation.

In March 2022, Cosovic asked about the possibility of building a course at Harvard. So she spoke to Eva Stathi Miso, an NELC student co-ordinator. Before coming to the United States to study classics at the Hellenic College in Brooklyn, Stathi Miso studied Albanian languages and literature in Tirana.

Stathi Miso is often asked what language is spoken in Albania, so he believes that this course will make the answer to that question easier.
