The size, speed and exact number of tornadoes that hit the Central United States will not be clear until ground reports from around the region are collected. The National Weather Service said there are expected to be numerous confirmations of tornadoes, while polls are complete.
Powerful storms have ended up in affected regions, but strong winds are hitting most of the country, including the West and the northeast, the National Weather Service said.
At least five people were killed in Arkansas, according to state and city officials. One person died after a supercell tornado marched to North Little Rock and then moved to Little Rock, Ark. At least four people were killed in Wynne, Ark., when a tornado caused by the same supercelle hit that city, the National Weather Service said.
Tens of others were injured throughout the state, some in critical condition, Arkansas officials said.
A person was killed in Belvidre, when the roof of a theater collapsed by a tornado, National Weather Service meteorologist Ashton Robinson Cook said. At least two dozen people were injured in the collapse, he said.
Three people were killed during a storm on Robinson, he said. The same storm moved to Indiana, causing two victims near the town of Sullivan, according to weather service reports.
In Alabama, officials reported a death from the storm and multiple injuries at Madison County, Cook said.
Numerous Tornadoes hit southeastern Iowa and left several injured, he said.
