Zelensky imposes sanctions on Assad

Ukraine's president, Voldymyr Zelensky, signed a decree Saturday to sanction hundreds of individuals, including Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, according to a Ukrainian government statement. The decree, which adopted a proposal by the Ukrainian National Security and Protection Council, imposes sanctions mainly on Russian citizens and judiciaries, writes CNN.
But the list includes other prominent names, such as Syrian Prime Minister Hussain Arnoous, Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal al-Makdad and Iran's Armed Forces Chief of Staff Mohammad Bagheri.
Sanctions, which order a ban on trade operations and limit or completely restrict transportation resources, flights, or other travel across Ukraine, will be established for 10 years.
This week, Assad met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on his first visit to Russia since Ukraine's aggression.
Assad, who was able to stay in power because of Russia's long-standing military support, reiterated loyalty to Putin and his support for the war in Ukraine.
