YIHR for the events of March 2004: Kosovo, Serbia enable people to return to their homes

On the 19th anniversary of the start of March 2004 riots in Kosovo, the Youth Initiative for Human Rights Serbia and the Youth Initiative for Human Rights Kosovo appeal to their governments to show genuine respect for all victims of violence [...]

This organisation cites the Fund for Humanitarian Law (FHD), where it says that in the March riots in Kosovo, 23 people lost their lives: a Macedonian Jana Tucev, nine Serbs Dragan Nedeljkovq, Slobodan Periq, Dusanka Petkoviq, Borivoje Spasojevic, Borko Stoliq, Dobrie Stoliq, Slobodan Tanjiq, Zlatbor Trajkovic and Nenda Vesnaj, and 13, Albanians Fatmir Abdullah Feru, Chidaku, Elastrian, Isaac, Murdham Ibrahimi, Agroni Ramadani, Argson Ramadana, Nezhmani, Shikatzaj, Shirvaj, Shirvaj, Shirvaj, Shirvaj, Shirvaj, Përkahqi, Shkatka, Shkajkajka, Shkajkajka, Erkajkatt e Shka, Erkajt e Shka, Shkajka, Shkat e Shka, Shka, Shkahqi, Shkajkajkatttt e Shka, Shkahqi.

“at the time, about 170 Serbs were injured, 150 were beaten in their homes, while 20 of them were injured in street attacks. As far as the facilities are concerned, about 800 Serb, 90 Ashkali houses and two Albanians have been completely destroyed or severely damaged. In addition to civilian property, 36 Orthodox churches were completely destroyed and burned. According to UN Secretary General, 954 people were injured in the March riots, including 65 international police officers, 58 KPS members and 61 members of the international peacekeeping force”, says Y IHR, reports Klankosova.tv. In the OSCE's report on community rights assessment in June 2021, according to Y The IHR, said that since December 2019, 28,302 displaced persons have returned to Kosovo since 2000, and that the return rate has decreased every year and that this trend continues to decline.

“U n The NHCR also estimates there are 16,151 displaced persons in Kosovo, out of whom 412 live in one of the temporary collective shelters”, the organisation says.
For more than two decades, Y The IHR says commemorations and victims have been misused for spreading the propaganda of states and national political benefits. This current behaviour of governments is promoting ethnic tensions, creating even stronger barriers to the reconciliation process”.

The Kosovo Youth Initiative says that discrimination of the Serb community in Kosovo “is spreading through violent attacks by members of the Kosovo Special Police Unit, as recently happened in Leposaviq, and through the process of expropriating the Serb community in Kosovo”.“In Serbia, on the other hand, discriminatory language is used by some of the highest state representatives, including President Vuq, who declared in Serbia's Parliament that all political prisoners during the Milosevic regime are terrorists, as well as discrimination, and practice are being implemented by means of the Albanian community's viewing, including the organisation's further emphasis in Serbia.

Therefore, Y The IHR asks the Kosovo government to unequivocally condemn the ethnically motivated attacks on Serbs in Kosovo, providing domestic displaced people and refugees safely return to their homes. “We call on the Government of Serbia to put an end to discriminatory practices, such as the failure of Albanian community addresses in Serbia, to prevent hatred of Albanians, especially in dates like March 17th, and to seek public forgiveness for failing to prevent violence aimed at destroying the property of Albanians, Bosniaks and Turks in Serbia, and setting fires on mosques in Belgrade and Nis”, was highlighted in this communique.
