In addition to the benefits derived from the European proposal, US Ambassador to Kosovo Jeffrey Havenier has said that Kosovo can even indirectly benefit from the March 18th meeting in Ohrid on Saturday, writes the online newspaper Reporter.net.
If it is seen that Kosovo has contributed to an agreement on implementation of the European proposal, Havenier has said the US will massively increase its activity to enable Kosovo membership in the North-Atlantic Alliance.
“We believe that Kosovo should one day be, and will be a member of the North Atlantic Alliance, and the only question is how to make the right conditions to do so. If we reach an agreement in Ohrid and Kosovo is seen as contributing to reaching this agreement successfully and constructively, I think you will see renewed American activity and realisation of this vision. It's not like we haven't tried past”, Ambassador Havenier declared on ATV.
As he spoke of Partnership for Peace, Houvenier said that a consensus decision is reached here, so he was reluctant to provide guarantees that Kosovo will be joined immediately.
However, he pointed out that American support will also be powerful.
I have to mention another point. NATO makes decisions with consensus. All decisions are reached by consensus, as we see in all NATO decisions. So I cannot provide guarantees that the aspirations the people of Kosovo, which we have, will be achieved immediately. But what I can tell you is that you will see powerful American efforts and support for this target”, he said further.
And aspirations for reaching agreement in Ohrid, Havenier said they are pronounced. From there, the American ambassador added that after the agreement is reached, they also expect its application.
I expect that when the agreement is reached we will see similar commitment to its implementation. Can I guarantee that implementation will happen as parties agreed...? I can only guarantee that the international community will seek this and we have carefully considered what means we have to offer appropriate incentives for full implementation”, he said.
Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti, and Serbia's president, Aleksandar Vuciq, will meet in Ohrid on March 18th to talk about implementing the agreement. Presents at this meeting will be EU emissary Miroslav Lajcak and diplomacy chief Josep Borrell. Meanwhile, the online newspaper Reporter.net has learned that part of the meeting will be US envoy to the Western Balkans Gabriel Escobar.
